Joshua Lurie from Food GPS gets the first look at Intelligentsia’s newest cafe located in Pasadena, CA. Aside from the company’s growth in general there doesn’t seem to be much to report about the new space (yet). Syphons, pourovers, Synessos, etc. Clovers, I imagine, will not be on the menu. The biggest departure from the [...]

Breaking on Sprudge this morning is news of an apparent strike by the workers of Gorilla Coffee in Brooklyn’s Park Slope. Although not unionized like the workers at Ithaca’s Coffee Co, it appears that employees planned a walk-out that began last night. Details are still coming in, but for more coverage see: Sprudge.com » Unconfirmed: [...]

At least according to Eileen Hassi of Ritual Coffee it is. And who can blame her? Managing both Ben and Steve (featured above) must feel like playground duty. Also featured in yesterday’s New York Times article are Blue Bottle, Ecco Caffe, Four Barrel, Barefoot, and Sight Glass. Although for a more detailed perspective on the state of San [...]

An interesting piece on ABC’s Nightline about Starbucks, featuring interviews with Howard Shultz. Particularly interesting to me was the contrast they made between Starbucks and Cafe Grumpy. Starbucks and Grumpy have a little bit of history, with Shultz famously declaring that Grumpy served him “the best cup of brewed coffee I have ever tasted” shortly before he acquired the Coffee [...]

Although I think it’s admirable that they enjoy “exposing the natural affinity between coffee and wood”, I find it curious that Summermoon Wood Fired Coffee seems to miss the connection between coffee and themselves. From their arguably misguided commitment to Fair Trade, to their web shop that lacks so completely in transparency the countries of origin aren’t even [...]

I found myself once again following up on a NY Times post by Oliver Strand, this time visiting Blue Bottle‘s newest location in Brooklyn (and first on the East Coast). The space is large, nearly 4,000 square feet, and most of it is dedicated to roasting production. The service area has a paddle group La [...]

What if you could easily isolate and identify each of the compounds above? Discovering unique and interesting coffees from hundreds of samples would become a lot easier. Similarly, desirable roast profiles would be easier to seek out and repeat. Researchers at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign have created a way to do just that using pigments that change color [...]

“Before Stumptown, Gorilla, Grumpy, and even Dallis, there was a coffee roaster who set up shop in Manhattan, and 160 years later, still proclaims the good news about specialty coffee. Gillie’s Coffee, who moved to Brooklyn from Greenwich Village in 1991, survived through the tumultuous economic times in the coffee world, the “coffee crash” of 1881, [...]

GQ Magazine listed their favorite coffee companies in America, complete with a slideshow. It’s nice to see so many friends acknowledged at once, and to such a large audience. Congrats to you all! Chris, this isn’t the first time your arm has been published. Bonus points to you if you can remember the first. (via [...]

In perhaps the biggest news to hit NYC coffee since Ninth St switched to Intelly, Eater has reported that Joe the Art of Coffee will switch to exclusive use of Ecco Caffe starting tomorrow. Sprudge had the scoop about a month ago, but the time has come to finally make the switch. As purveyors of [...]

Yesterday I was surprised by James Freeman walking in the door. Today I was surprised to hear from VendrTV about this piece they did at Blue Bottle Coffee. Each week they travel the globe making podcasts “covering the best of the best curbside cuisines the world has to offer”. In this episode host Daniel Delaney [...]

Ritual Roasters in San Francisco, California got some nice slide show action when News Day stopped by to watch them cup samples for the Panama Esmeralda auction that just occurred. Of course, the photo shoot happened before the auction. So naturally I had to go back to the auction results to double check whether or [...]
