A couple of weeks ago Jason Dominy became frustrated enough to rant a bit on Twitter (probably not the best idea). The issue essentially being that there are high quality cafes within the industry that don’t get the “respect” they deserve from the global coffee community. More specifically, Jason’s new employer Batdorf & Bronson/Dancing Goats.

Yes, you could use this grenade inspired Moka Pot while camping in your post-apocalyptic backyard, but it probably won’t taste very good. If you’re looking for a multi-tasker you can throw, the Mypressi Twist will taste better, and probably do more damage anyway.

Joshua Lurie from Food GPS gets the first look at Intelligentsia’s newest cafe located in Pasadena, CA. Aside from the company’s growth in general there doesn’t seem to be much to report about the new space (yet). Syphons, pourovers, Synessos, etc. Clovers, I imagine, will not be on the menu. The biggest departure from the [...]

The Milk Bar’s Alexander Hall thinks so. “The New York coffee scene is similar to Melbourne in 1985.” Ouch! But Francesco Agoftino from the Glass Shop thinks flat whites are “uncool”. And apparently the issue is so sensitive, a former Melburnian “who was also the first to roast premium-grade beans in New York” won’t even [...]

At least according to Eileen Hassi of Ritual Coffee it is. And who can blame her? Managing both Ben and Steve (featured above) must feel like playground duty. Also featured in yesterday’s New York Times article are Blue Bottle, Ecco Caffe, Four Barrel, Barefoot, and Sight Glass. Although for a more detailed perspective on the state of San [...]

Voice Systems Technology, Inc. has released a pretty slick iPhone app that calculates the extraction yields and TDS percentages of your brews. Naturally a refractometer is still required to actually make calculations, but no longer are you dependent on Windows only software to make sense of what you are calculating. If you’re not sure why you need [...]
