Gabe and Colleen by Liz Clayton

Congratulations to both Gabe Boscana and Colleen Anunu, who are now two of 636 licensed Q Graders worldwide.   They both successfully completed the three day course “comprising 22 sections on coffee related subjects, such as green grading, roast identification, coffee cupping, sensory skills and sensory triangulation”.

There are only two (three…thanks Ryan!) SCAA certified labs where the Q grader program takes place.  Coffee Solutions in Hopedale, Mass, and Coffee Lab International in Waterbury, Vermont (the third is located in Long Beach, CA at the SCAA HQ).  Luckily for Gabe and Colleen both of them are located in the Northeast, not too far from home here in the Empire State.  It’s a  grueling process that I haven’t had the guts to try, and I’m proud of them both.

Q-Grader exams don’t require a SCAA Certified Lab. SCAA Cupping Judge courses do require a certified lab. Q exams have been administered all over the place.

Thanks Nick. The Q grader course can be taken anywhere, but it has to be run by Coffee Solutions or Coffee Lab International? http://www.coffeeinstitute.org/q_test_information.asp

First both of these kids need to be congratulated and all the people whom have passed the Q-grader test’s it is pure hell for three days or a week. Which both took the week long way.
Actually I will attempt to correct a few things here.
Now for the Q-grader test Nick is correct that they have been given all over places, but here in the US there is a standing agreement with CQI that the Q-grader test will not be given unless it is in a certified Lab. SCAA Cupping Judge course does require a Certified Lab to be given and there are four places in the US.
    1. Coffee Lab, VT, http://www.coffeelab.com
    2. SCAA HQ, CA, http://www.scaa.org
    3. Coffee Solutions, MA, http://www.coffeesolutions.net
    4. RoZark Hills, AR http://www.qgrader.com

Also the class and test have to given by a Certified Instructor and depending weather or not the instructor is certified to give one or both vary form instructor to instructor. Because not all can do both.

Congratulations Gabe and Colleen! That’s a crazy accomplishment, and a big fat feather in the cap of your employer. (who said raise?)
Cheers, and enjoy the fantastic weather this weekend for Ithacafest!
